Special report: lockdown has seen more children dangerously ill with eating disorders

Children as young as 10 are arriving in hospital dangerously ill as the number of young people suffering with eating disorders goes ‘through the roof’.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital’s specialist Eating Disorders Service has seen referrals increase by around 23%, and the young patients arriving are sicker.

During the months of the coronavirus pandemic the service has seen the highest level of demand since it began.

A report into the effects of lockdown on eating disorder service at Alder Hey said it had seen: ‘An increase in the number of children and young people that are presenting at their first assessment as being at high physical risk’.

The service has also seen ‘a decline in the health of young people known to the service that, prior to lockdown, were recovering from an eating disorder and working towards improving both their physical and mental health.’
