I was bullied in secondary school from Year 8 until halfway through Year 10, when my parents finally pulled me out because it was seriously affecting my physical and mental health.
Before that, I had the occasional issue on the playground, but the school handled things quickly, and they blew over. That all changed when a new girl, Claire*, joined our school. She’d been expelled from her previous school, unbeknownst to me at the time, for bullying other students, and my head of year asked me to ‘buddy up’ with her. We became friends, even though my other friends didn’t like her. But I told them not to be mean – she was new, and I wanted to give her a chance. My parents even took her out with us for dinner, to the cinema, bowling, etc.
