Girls: Victims of double discrimination.

In many countries, girls are the first victims when children’s human rights are violated and they often suffer double discrimination: for their age and for their gender. They are more discriminated against than boys, for being minors and female. Furthermore, this double discrimination can become triple discrimination if one adds other factors, such as being poor or disabled, or belonging to a minority group.
The following facts illustrate the differences between girls and boys:
- Girls under five years old are three times more likely to suffer malnutrition than boys under five.
- In developing countries, one in three girls do not finish primary education, most often because they spend eight times longer carrying out household tasks. Consequently, there are 96 million illiterate girls aged between 15 and 24, compared to 57 million illiterate boys.
