Environment Minister Mary Creagh has confirmed that glass bottles will not be included in England and Northern Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), much to the disappointment of green groups.

Under a DRS, customers are required to pay a small deposit when buying drinks, which is refunded when they return the drink packaging for recycling via an approved method. This can be done at supermarket counters or through reverse vending machines.
In a written response to a question posed by a Liberal Democrat MP, Environment Minister Mary Creagh has outlined that the UK-wide DRS’s operations in England and Northern Ireland will cover single-use drinks containers between 150ml and 3 litres, focusing on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, steel and aluminium containers.
Glass bottles, despite calls for their inclusion and public support, will not be part of the scheme.
