Chlamydia

Description: Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis. It affects both men and women and can lead to serious health issues if left untreated, such as infertility in women. It is often referred to as a ‘silent’ infection because many people with chlamydia experience no symptoms, allowing it to spread unknowingly.

Signs or symptoms: Symptoms, when they do appear, may include abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis, pain during urination, or discomfort during sex. Women may also experience abdominal pain or bleeding between periods.

Diagnosis: Chlamydia is diagnosed through a urine test or a swab from the affected area (e.g., cervix, urethra).

Treatments: Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics, usually azithromycin or doxycycline.
