The Big Issue founder spoke remotely to the House of Lords today and asked the Government to protect renters during the Covid-19 crisis.

Big Issue founder Lord John Bird today questioned housing minister Lord Greenhalgh on the Government’s strategy to avoid a surge in homelessness when the current ban on evictions in England and Wales ends on August 23.

There are fears that 227,000 private renters who have fallen into arrears during the Covid-19 crisis could face homelessness if the Government does not move to protect them.

That’s why Bird brought the question of homelessness to the House of Lords today, with just weeks to go until thousands could be put at risk.

‘If people slip into poverty, then into homelessness, it is very difficult to bring them out of it,’ he said.

Bird pointed to housing charity Shelter’s urgent efforts to change the law and end evictions if caused by poverty driven by Covid-19 job losses and income cuts .
