Throughout history, governments and societies have sought to influence birth rates. Human populations have been viewed alternately as a valuable ‘fighting resource’ in times of war and as a threat to limited resources.
There are now many countries in the world with policies aimed at reducing their population growth. Most are developing countries and in only one case, China’s, is the policy coercive. Thailand and Iran, for instance, have achieved fertility reduction comparable to China’s by non-coercive means. We support such non-coercive policies.
We believe governments should support responsible parenthood through sex and relationship education, publicity campaigns for better reproductive health and the provision of accessible, appropriate and affordable reproductive health programmes.
