Over the past forty years, improvements in road safety have helped reduce the number of people killed in accidents. Safer cars, stricter laws, better road designs, and public awareness campaigns have all played a role in saving lives. However, despite these positive changes, too many people are still losing their lives on the road.

A look at the numbers

The latest figures from 2023 show that road deaths in great britain have dropped, but the progress is slow. The final estimates for reported road collisions in 2023 reveal that:

  • 1,624 people died in road accidents, which is 5% lower than in 2022.
  • 29,711 people were killed or seriously injured (ksi), showing little change compared to 2022.
  • 132,977 people suffered injuries of all severities, a 2% decrease from 2022.
