Sports coaches and religious leaders who have sex with 16- and 17-year olds in their care are to face prosecution under proposals to protect children from abuse.

The Positions of Trust Law will prevent adults in a position of authority and with direct contact from engaging in sexual relationships with people under 18.

Thousands of advocates, including MPs and charities, backed the campaign to close the ‘loophole’ in the Sexual Offences Act, which already applies to roles such as teachers and social workers.

The move comes after a four-year campaign by children’s charity NSPCC following a number of cases involving sports coaches taking advantage of people in their care.
