Shell will start building new renewable hydrogen plant in the Netherlands
Holland Hydrogen I to produce 60k kilograms of renewable hydrogen a day
By Jane Denton
Shell is to start building a renewable hydrogen plant in the Netherlands, which is slated to be Europe’s largest once operational in 2025.
The energy giant said the 200 megawatt electrolyser, called ‘Holland Hydrogen I’, in the port of Rotterdam, will produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen a day.
The London-based group, which aims to become a net zero greenhouse gas emissions company by 2050, has been boosting its low-carbon output as it shifts away from oil and gas.
Shell said it aims to produce hydrogen at the plant using electricity generated by the offshore wind park, Hollandse Kust Noord, which it partly owns.
The renewable hydrogen produced will supply the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, by way of the HyTransPort pipeline, where it will replace some of the grey hydrogen usage in the refinery.
