Abuse or neglect can happen to anyone, and sometimes it’s not always obvious that there is anything untoward happening. It can also be an one-off traumatic event or continued abusive behaviour that can happen in person, or even online.

So why is it important that we recognise the signs of abuse or neglect? Well, to put it simply, so we can protect ourselves and those that we care about.

What is abuse?

  • Neglect. This is the failure to meet basic needs, such as adequate food or clothing, as well as a lack of love, or attention.
  • Physical abuse. This is physical harm such as hitting, burning, shaking, kicking and other forms of violence towards another person.
  • Emotional abuse. This can include intentionally withholding love and affection, bullying, belittling, intimidation and making the person feel worthless.
  • Sexual abuse. This can happen online or in person. This is when a person forces or entices a young person in to sexual activity, which can include making or viewing indecent image...
