Which words were associated with family?

When asked which three words respondents first thought of when they heard the word ‘family’, parents and children across all ages, gender and ethnicities were likely to select similar words of positive sentiment. ‘Loving’ was the word most likely to be selected by parents (64%), followed by ‘home’ (43%), ‘caring’ (40%), ‘supportive’ (38%) and ‘happy’ (37%). All of the negative terms listed in the survey (stressful, struggles, pressure, breakdown, unhealthy and unsupportive) were selected by fewer than 7% of parents. Similarly, when asked to select three words to describe family, children (aged 8-17) were most likely to select ‘loving’ (63%), followed by ‘happy’ (51%) and ‘home’ (48%).
