Not all suffering is visible – some children endure in silence, unnoticed and unheard. Around one in ten children in the UK are affected by neglect, which is the most common form of child abuse.
Neglect can be many different things, and unlike other forms of abuse, is not always intentional. However, it can still leave deep, lasting scars on a child or young person. It is crucial that those experiencing neglect receive support, whether by speaking out themselves or through the intervention of someone who can help. Here, we will look at some of the different forms of neglect that young people may experience.
What is child neglect?
Simply put, neglect is a pattern of failing to provide for a child’s basic needs. This can occur when a parent or guardian lacks the knowledge to care for a child, struggles with mental health issues, or battles substance abuse.
