Unemployment and education status
162,000 unemployed young people were in full-time education (35% of all unemployed young people) in November 2021-January 2022, similar to the previous quarter and a fall of 25,000 from the year before. Excluding those in full-time education, 295,000 people aged 16-24 were unemployed. This is similar to the previous quarter, and a fall of 104,000 from the year before.
The unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds in full-time education was 14.0%, down from 19.5% a year before. It was 9.9% for those not in full-time education, down from 13.1% a year before.
Unemployment by age
358,000 18-24 year olds were unemployed in November 2021-January 2022, while 1.65 million were economically inactive and 3.33 million were in work. The unemployment rate for people aged 18-24 was 9.7%, down from 13.5% a year before.
99,000 16-17 year olds were unemployed, while 1.01 million were economically inactive and 350,000 were in work.
